As SPRING Training approaches, the OAKLAND A'S are still without a radio flagship, and the SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE's SUSAN SLUSSER reports that the team insists that it will be on terrestrial radio but is also looking at partnerships for streaming game broadcasts.
The A'S made a highly public and messy split from former flagship ENTERCOM Sports KGMZ (95.7 THE GAME)/SAN FRANCISCO after last season amidst complaints from the club that THE GAME did not offer enough coverage of the team outside the actual game broadcasts. Since then, the A'S have explored buying a station to air the games, including a look at CUMULUS News-Talk KGO-A, but did not succeed, although A's President DAVE KAVAL told SLUSSER that a radio purchase remains an option.
KAVAL told SLUSSER, “Terrestrial radio is kind of dying and we need to look long-term at how you get in front of people with audio. There is still going to be an audio feed of the game, the way there is with traditional radio, but there are going to be many ways people can consume that and we want to provide options to achieve that in multiple ways.” He said that the team is close to a deal for game broadcasts and added, "we’ll have a terrestrial option that’s better than what we had."
KEN KOVACH and VINCE COTRINEO will return to call the games no matter what outlet ultimately carries the broadcasts, KAVAL said.
