A report by PETER KAFKA at RECODE says that SPOTIFY is in talks to buy podcast producer GIMLET MEDIA for over $200 million. KAFKA, citing unnamed sources, calls the talks "advanced" and notes that the purchase would be SPOTIFY's first deal to take over a content company.
GIMLET's last funding round valued the company at $70 million in 2017; the ALEX BLUMBERG-founded, BROOKLYN-based production house is the network behind podcasts like "REPLY ALL," "START UP," and "HEAVYWEIGHT" and has produced branded content through its GIMLET CREATIVE division. SPOTIFY has been active in producing original podcasts and indicated in appearances at CES last month that it plans to expand its activity in that regard.
