COLUMBUS PUBLIC SCHOOLS Variety WCBE/COLUMBUS, OH has piled up over $869,000 in debt and a nonprofit group is offering to relive that obligation in exchange for control of the station, according to a report in the COLUMBUS DISPATCH.
The paper reports that school district documents show that while the station is supposed to be self-sustaining through donations collected from fundraising drives, the station owes $869,462.70 to NPR for programming, with overdue invoices dating back to 2015. GM DAN MUSHALKO revealed the debt to his school district supervisor SCOTT VARNER last week and has been suspended without pay; the paper adds that MUSHALKO, before telling the district about the debt last TUESDAY (1/29), spoke to a nonprofit, WCBE OHIO INC., headed by attorney DON MCTIGUE, about the problem, leading to that group offering to pay the debt and take over the station.
The school district has launched an internal audit and inquiry to determine what is owed and why the NPR debt was not caught in previous audits.
