Canadian radio stations won't need to increase Canadian content to 40%, but there will be more Canadian jazz, blues, and concert music on the air under CRTC guidelines released FRIDAY. The CanCon level for most formats will remain at 35%, with concert music set at 25% (up from 10%) and jazz and blues at 20% (also up from 10%).
The CRTC also plans to ask license renewal applicants to make specific commitments to play music by emerging artists in their applications, and has proposed adding fees based on station revenues to help finance development of Canadian talent, looking to increase the amount already given by broadcasters to several talent development programs. Stations presently pay fees to the talent initiatives based on market size; the new plan is aimed at doubling that amount, with small stations paying about C$500. and larger stations paying C$1,000. plus 0.5% of revenues over C$1 million.
