Do you have “time vampires” in your life? That was the provocative question that kicked off a session on time management at COUNTRY RADIO SEMINAR in NASHVILLE on WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 13th. BIG LOUD RECORDS Pres. CLAY HUNNICUT and VP/Promotion STACY WAUGH were joined on the panel by COX WWKA/ORLANDO Dir./Operations STEVE STEWART in leading attendees through a series of helpful tips.
Among their tips: Identify the key people you work with who take the most of your time, then manage that relationship rather than letting it manage you. “Don’t wait till things become urgent or a crisis,” said HUNNICUTT. “And be prepared for the unexpected, because somebody will hijack your day.” Among their other tips: pick your priorities, make a to-do list, and separate the “must dos” from the “nice to dos” on your list. HUNNICUTT noted that there is no such thing as an issue that takes “just one minute” of your time, and cautioned that even if someone comes into your office “with their hair on fire,” their supposedly urgent problem doesn’t mean you have to drop everything.
As for those “vampires,” said STEWART, “If you don’t set boundaries with those people, it’s never going to change.” Added WAUGH, “You can be your own time vampire by not having an organizational flow.” And if all else fails, joked HUNNICUTT, wear garlic.
