Hit singer/songwriter LORI MCKENNA and writer/editor ROB SIMBECK sat down for a Q&A session moderated by MIDWEST COMMUNICATIONS’ TOM BALDRICA to discuss the art of storytelling and three things to sweat when it comes to writing: the prep, the details, and the edit. The session took place today (2/15) during COUNTRY RADIO SEMINAR in NASHVILLE.
Whether you’re putting together lyrics for the next MEDIABASE chart-topper or conducting an artist interview, these three rules will help your product meet its greatest potential:
1. Sweat the prep. Being prepared is the most important thing when it comes to your art. Yes, you want to be concise and memorable, but as BALDRICA shared, “if you’re prepared, being memorable and concise will follow.”
2. Sweat the details. As MCKENNA simply put: “Make sure the emotion is there.” And, be ruthless. As SIMBECK added, “The best writing comes from ruthlessness.” He also noted the importance of having someone to look up to. Find a mentor, and soak up all of their knowledge.
3. Sweat the edit. The more you practice your craft, the better you become at it. And, the more you write, the easier editing will become. However, as SIMBECK offered, it is extremely crucial to respect the story and structure it in a way that’s going to best capture the audience’s attention. Remember that there’s no limit on how long a story can be. “If it’s a good story,” SIMBECK said, “it doesn’t matter.
