LONG ISLAND UNIVERSITY has announced the winners of the 70th annual GEORGE POLK Awards in Journalism, and for the first time, a podcast was one of the winners, with the second season of AMERICAN PUBLIC MEDIA/APM REPORTS' "IN THE DARK," an examination of a case in which one African-American man was tried six times for the same crime and ended up on death row, honored
"The POLK Awards recognize the changing landscape of news," said Awards Curator JOHN DANTON. "The story of a person who in all likelihood is wrongly convicted is tried and true. But the podcast, as a delivery vehicle spread over multiple episodes that makes listeners feel it is unfolding in real time right before their ears, is a new and exciting reincarnation."
