CITADEL Talk WHLD-A (NEWSTALK 1270- THE VOICE OF REASON)/BUFFALO has flipped to Gospel, dropping the liberal talk format and AIR AMERICA RADIO programming it picked up in FEBRUARY. The talk programming had been operated by local group NIAGARA INDEPENDENT MEDIA, which will continue to program the station with the new format (and will continue to carry PACIFICA's "DEMOCRACY NOW" daily at 1p on WHLD and also on sister Gospel WBBF-A). WHLD had encountered competition from ENTERCOM, which flipped crosstown WWKB-A to liberal talk using JONES' ED SCHULTZ and STEPHANIE MILLER just before WHLD's version of the format hit the air.
In a message on the station's website, station manager BRIAN BROWN-CASHDOLLAR says "even after overcoming many hurdles, rebuilding the station, growing our sales revenue (10 fold in less than 6 months) and steady growth in ratings, we weren’t able to sustain it. We came close to pulling off this nearly impossible task, but in the end we had to make a move to protect our investors. As to why we had to make this move, the short answer is cashflow. The long story is much more interesting, and one day soon we’ll tell it." He also urges listeners to contact ENTERCOM GM TIM WENGER to voice support of WWKB's liberal talk format, warning that " rumor has it that they’re going to dump their 'progressive line-up' in the very near future."
