TV and RADIO MARTI will buy time on UNIVISION Talk WAQI-A (RADIO MAMBI) and JAMES J. CHLADEK AZTECA AMERICA LPTV affiliate WPMF-LP/MIAMI to air some of its programming, reports the MIAMI HERALD. The move is an unusual attempt to get around laws that prevent the programming from being distributed to U.S. audiences and to circumvent Cuban jamming of the services' primary signals.
WAQI's signal technically reaches CUBA, although it experiences jamming from CUBA's RADIO REBELDE that can be heard beneath the signal even in SOUTH FLORIDA, and WPMF, a low-power station, is available as one of the local MIAMI signals on satellite, which some Cubans can watch.
The OFFICE OF CUBA BROADCASTING is spending $377,500. ($182,500. for six months of midnight-1a broadcasts on WAQI) for the carriage and believes that the act that established RADIO MARTI allows for such domestic time purchases in order to overcome jamming of the primary AM and TV signals.
