There was plenty of nostalgia waxing at the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME induction ceremony, held last month at THE BARCLAY CENTER in BROOKLYN (and subsequently broadcast last night on HBO), but it was also a call to arms. While British groups DEF LEPPARD, RADIOHEAD, THE CURE, ROXY MUSIC and THE ZOMBIES were honored, inductees STEVIE NICKS (already inducted as part of FLEETWOOD MAC) and JANET JACKSON (who saw brother MICHAEL and siblings THE JACKSONS inducted years earlier) urged that the HALL admit more female artists.
NICKS noted she is the first female solo artist inducted, following 22 male solo artists. “I hope what I am doing is opening up the door for other women,” she said. Later in the ceremony, JANET JACKSON would echo those sentiments by stating, "ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME, please, 2020: Induct more women!”
JANET JACKSON was one of two inductees who did not perform during the show. The other was RADIOHEAD, presumably because only two members of the band -- guitarist ED O’BRIEN and drummer PHIL SELWAY -- showed up to accept the award.
Although a few songs from certain artists' performances were edited out of the broadcast due to time restrictions, the following set list" was broadcast:
HARRY STYLES presented STEVIE NICKS, who performed “Stand Back,” “Leather and Lace” (with DON HENLEY), “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” (with STYLES) and “Edge of Seventeen.”
NINE INCH NAILS' TRENT REZNOR presented THE CURE, who performed “Shake Dog Shake,” “Lovesong,” “Just Like Heaven” and “Boys Don’t Cry.”
JANELLE MONAE presented JANET JACKSON, who accepted the honor but did not perform.
DURAN DURAN's SIMON LE BON and JOHN TAYLOR presented ROXY MUSIC, who performed were “Out of the Blue,” “Avalon” and “Editions of You.”
TALKING HEADS' mastermind DAVID BYRNE presented RADIOHEAD; two band members accepted but did not perform.
THE BANGLES' singer/guitarist SUSANNA HOFFS presented THE ZOMBIES, who performed were “Time of the Season,” “Tell Her No” and “She’s Not There.”
QUEEN guitarist BRIAN MAY presented DEF LEPPARD, who performed “Rock of Ages,” “Photograph” and “Pour Some Sugar on Me.”
For the all-star finale, DEF LEPPARD, BRIAN MAY, COLIN BLUNSTONE, ROD ARGENT, SUSANNA HOFFS and STEVEN VAN ZANDT brought up MOTT THE HOOPLE frontman IAN HUNTER to perform MOTT's classic hit, “All the Young Dudes.”
