The PROPUBLICA Local Reporting Network has added six more news operations to its roster of participants, including two connected to public radio. The additions, selected from a field of 138 applicants, bring the total number of newsrooms in the nonprofit investigative reporting organization's local initiative to 20. PROPUBLICA will pay each of the assigned reporters' salary and benefits for a year and will add its expertise to the reporters' efforts.
The new additions include OREGON PUBLIC BROADCASTING (with reporter TONY SCHICK assigned to the initiative); LOUISVILLE PUBLIC MEDIA's KENTUCKY CENTER FOR INVESTIGATIVE REPORTING (R.G. DUNLOP); GANNETT's ARIZONA REPUBLIC (ALDEN WOODS); TRIBUNE PUBLISHING's THE CAPITAL of ANNAPOLIS (DANIELLE OHL); the TULSA FRONTIER online news site (BRIANNA BAILEY); and MCCLATCHY's MIAMI HERALD (CAROL MARBIN MILLER).
PROPUBLICA Sr. Editor ZAHIRA TORRES said, “I am excited to work with these newsrooms to realize their ambitious visions for local journalism. We reviewed a highly competitive field of applications and we’re delighted to work on this diverse range of important projects.”
“The Local Reporting Network has already exceeded our high expectations for it,” said Deputy Managing Editor CHARLES ORNSTEIN, who oversees the local network. “The stories are resonating deeply in their communities and prompting real change. We are confident these new projects will do the same.”
