The NEW YORK YANKEES' longtime radio voice JOHN STERLING will take the day off on his 81st birthday, THURSDAY (7/4), according to the NEW YORK POST, and that's news because STERLING has not taken any days off from YANKEES broadcasts since 1989.
The POST's ANDREW MARCHAND says that STERLING told him that he will sit out the four-game series against the TAMPA BAY RAYS in ST. PETERSBURG because "(f)or the moment, I’m a little under the weather. I’ve put in the time. I want to feel better and they think this is the time for me to do it -- and I agree."
RYAN RUOCCO will call the RAYS series with regular analyst SUZYN WALDMAN, STERLING's on-air partner since 2004; STERLING plans to return after the ALL-STAR break. STERLING last missed games due to the passing of his sister in 1989.
