The MIAMI HERALD and parent MCCLATCHY NEWSPAPERS' MCCLATCHY STUDIOS audio division are launching a new six-part podcast and multimedia series looking at the story of an auto racing star who led a double life as a drug selling kingpin.
"SMOKED," reported and co-hosted by the HERALD's AMY DRISCOLL and ALEX HARRIS, examines how RANDY LANIER rose to be named Rookie of the Year at the 1986 INDIANAPOLIS 500 while leading a $300 million pot trafficking operation that landed him a life sentence, then was released after 27 years to a life of counseling recovering addicts and teaching racing. The series will be posted in its entirety on JULY 16th.
"The MIAMI HERALD was known for its comprehensive and groundbreaking coverage of smuggling and the SOUTH FLORIDA drug trade throughout the 1970s and '80s," said HERALD Editor/Publisher AMINDA MARQUÉS GONZÁLEZ. "This tale of weed, speed and the road ahead follows in those footsteps. 'SMOKED' is a gripping human interest story with an important underlying message that will engage audiences across the country."
"'SMOKED' represents the best of local reporting with national impact," said MCCLATCHY STUDIOS Exec. Producer of Audio DAVIN COBURN. "LANIER aspired to greatness -- and risked destruction -- in everything he did. It's a sensational story that our combined teams were uniquely positioned to tell."
