The LOS ANGELES TIMES' LA TIMES STUDIOS and WONDERY are teaming up again for another podcast, this time a seven-part docu-series about a legendary L.A. street racer who helped bring the city together in the wake of the '60s riots and gang violence but faded into obscurity, leaving questions behind.
"LARGER THAN LIFE," hosted by reporter DANIEL MILLER, explores the life of BIG WILLIE ROBINSON, a veteran who arrived in LOS ANGELES after the WATTS riots who reinvented himself as the king of street racing, displaying a knack for bringing peace between warring parties, including gangs and police, and draawing support from unlikely sources, like the TIMES' then-Publisher OTIS CHANDLER, whose memorial service ROBINSON interrupted with an impromptu eulogy.
The first two episodes have been posted, accompanied by bonus content on LATIMES.COM; an essay by MILLER about the project is online now and will appear in the print edition this SUNDAY (7/14).
