SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA PUBLIC RADIO has launched a podcast division that will include both new shows and existing podcasts produced by its News-Talk KPCC/PASADENA-LOS ANGELES. LAist STUDIOS, named after the website acquired by SCPR last year, is launching with a lineup including the earthquake scenario podcast "THE BIG ONE: YOUR SURVIVAL GUIDE"; "TELL THEM, I AM," stories from Muslim-Americans; "REPEAT," a look at a LOS ANGELES COUNTY Sheriff's deputy's shooting of a burglar in 2011; JOHN HORN's arts and culture podcast "THE FRAME"; and LARRY MANTLE's weekly movie podcast "FILMWEEK."
In a description of the new venture, SCPR said that it is looking for ideas for new podcasts, setting forth the criteria that the shows will "serve and feature the New Mainstream, the diverse and inclusive populations of LA (and the LAs around AMERICA) -- young, underrepresented and attracted to stories and conversations from a multitude of voices and should not be "afraid to break molds and invent new ones" with an eye towards ongoing series and possible development for film and television, concentrating in the initial stages on fact-based journalism stories, representing the "LA Conversation."
