SONY is bringing SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT and SONY/ATV MUSIC PUBLISHING under one umbrella company, SONY MUSIC GROUP, headed by SME CEO ROB STRINGER. The move, to take place AUGUST 1st, was disclosed in a memo to staff from Pres./CEO KENICHIRO YOSHIDA. SONY/ATV Chairman/CEO JON PLATT will report to STRINGER, who will remain CEO of the label side. SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT JAPAN will remain separate and will continue to report to YOSHIDA.
In the memo, YOSHIDA said that the move is meant "to further strengthen and solidify SONY’s position as a leader in the music industry and create new value for the company. This unification will help us foster a higher level of collaboration between our recorded music and music publishing businesses, while respecting and maintaining the independence and unique culture of each organization."
