SUMMITMEDIA/RICHMOND OM and Hot AC WURV (103.7 PLAY-FM) morning co-host MELISSA CHASE felt like she was part of a classic STEVEN SPIELBERG horror movie when she was bitten by a shark while on vacation. Fortunately, as she recalled on FACEBOOK, "it was a baby one and I’m fine now, but holy bananas it hurt sooo badly!"
The whole story, in her own words: "We were jumping waves at our favorite beach (SUNSET BEACH, NC) and they have these sandbars which are great for the kiddos, but unfortunately since the water wasn’t very high on us, I really didn’t notice just how far out from shore we were ... we were far. Having a great time jumping waves and being silly when I felt something rubbery slide between my legs and bump me ... I knew right away it was a shark but didn’t have enough time to react before it bit down on my ankle.
"The immediate pain felt exactly like you’d think it would when you watch a shark movie and it chomps down; my stomach felt completely nauseous. My 10-year-old was right next to me; our Mother’s helper and my six-year-old were a few yards away and I knew 1) I had to get out of the water right that minute and 2) I had to get the kids out of the water before they got bit. I yelled to my oldest that I got pinched by a crab and we had to get out of there quickly so she wouldn’t get bit (I was worried if I told her the truth that it was a shark she’d panic and try to climb on to me and that would bring her closer to danger) and screamed for the others to come out with us.
"We ran into shore and our friend who is a nurse helped get the bleeding under control. It was a small bite but we ended up going to get it checked out after a while. The hospital confirmed yes, it was a baby shark (they call them “pups”) but they couldn’t tell what kind because the teeth were too small to see the shape - some sharks have [serrated] teeth edges and/or multiple rows so they can often identify what type when they’re older. So they gave me a tetanus shot, another shot and an X-ray (to make sure there weren’t any teeth in the puncture wounds - there weren’t but that would have been kinda rad).
"It’s incredibly achy now and I’ll be on antibiotics to fight off any infections but overall good outcome. I was super lucky it wasn’t a big shark and beyond thankful it happened to me and not my kids. Plus I saw SPIDER-MAN and his powers started with a bite, so who knows, maybe I’ll end up with super powers after this!"
