The new FM translator interference rules adopted by the FCC on MAY 9th now have a starting date, with the publication of a summary of the rules in the Federal Register. The new rules become effective on AUGUST 13th.
The changes, unanimously approved at the Commission's MAY Open Meeting, streamline the FM translator interference complaint and resolution process by allowing translators to move within the non-reserved band as a minor change to alleviate interference, establishing a minimum requirement of six (three for LPFMs) and maximum of 65 complaints (depending on market size, one complaint for every 100,000 people in the station’s service area) to support an interference claim, and making additional changes to clarify and standardize complaint requirements, standardizing the contents of each listener complaint and placing an outer limit placed on interference complaint locations.
