NPR Cuts Some Newsroom Jobs, Will Add Positions In Other Departments

NPR has cut some jobs from its newsroom and is adding positions in other departments, the network's DAVID FOLKENFLIK is reporting.

In a note to the staff, SVP/News and Editorial Dir. NANCY BARNES said that fewer than 10 jobs are being eliminated and the move is "not about saving money" but instead is a realignment of resources, citing a need to add staff for investigations and reports on growing topic categories like opioid addiction, climate change, and pharmaceuticals.

Those being laid off in the coming weeks will have the opportunity to apply for the new positions, according to an NPR spokesperson cited by FOLKENFLIK.

In a tweet TUESDAY afternoon, FOLKENFLIK added that NPR National Security Correspondent DAVID WELNA was one of the staffers laid off, effective SEPTEMBER 6th, and that three video journalists were also cut.
