Today, AUGUST 20th, is NATIONAL RADIO DAY, which recognizes the medium that has been conveying news, music, sports events and human interest stories over the airwaves for almost a century. It all started in the late 1800s, when a variety of inventors, such as GUGLIELMO MARCONI, HEINRICH HERTZ and NIKOLA TESLA, came up with the necessary hardware to create broadcast technology.
With the invention of wireless in the 1920s, the first radio stations began airing programs. Within 20 years, 80% of AMERICA owned a radio. Now, there are well over 10,000 radio stations -- not including their online counterparts, with 71% of AMERICA listening to radio in the car, two-thirds of the country listen to the radio daily, and nearly one in 10 love to sing along to the radio.
