Cancer Takes Canned Heat Bassist Larry Taylor

Longtime CANNED HEAT bassist LARRY TAYLOR died MONDAY, AUGUST 19th at his LAKE BALBOA, CA home after a 12-year battle with cancer, ROLLING STONE reports. TAYLOR joined CANNED HEAT in 1967, and was with the band when they performed at the 1967 MONTEREY POP FESTIVAL and the original WOODSTOCK in 1969.
TAYLOR also toured with JERRY LEE LEWIS; was the regular studio bassist for THE MONKEES' recordings, worked as a session musician for artists such as ALBERT KING, SOLOMON BURKE, BUDDY GUY, JJ CALE, RY COODER, HARVEY MANDEL and CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE. His work can also heard on albums by JOHN LEE HOOKER, JOHN MAYALL, JOHN HAMMOND JR. and Tom WAITS; he was a regularly in WAITS’ touring band, playing upright bass.
“LARRY told great stories, funny jokes, was a foodie, wine, record, and rock poster collector, computer whiz and a special human being who really ‘lived for music,'” CANNED HEAT manager SKIP TAYLOR wrote in a statement. “Music was his religion! He influenced many of us in different ways and he will be missed by many throughout the music industry. Condolences to his wife, ANDREA, his son DANNY and his two daughters, REBECCA and MOLLY.”
