Four prominent TEXAS public radio stations are partnering with NPR for news coverage of underserved areas of the state, THE TEXAS NEWSROOM initiative includes the four members of the TEXAS STATION COLLABORATIVE, NORTH TEXAS PUBLIC BROADCASTING News-Talk KERA-F/DALLAS (the lead station), UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS News-Talk KUT/AUSTIN, TEXAS PUBLIC RADIO/SAN ANTONIO, and UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON/HOUSTON PUBLIC MEDIA News-Talk KUHF (NEWS 88.7)/HOUSTON.
Six live statewide newscasts from the consortium are airing each weekday and reporting from KUT's "TEXAS STANDARD" is being shared with stations across the state.
"Without access to information in local communities, at the state level, at the national and international level, nothing short of our Democracy is at stake," said NPR SVP of News and Editorial Dir. NANCY BARNES. "THE TEXAS NEWSROOM is the first step in our collaborative journalism project that, when fully developed, will make public radio the strongest reporting network in the country and fill the newsgathering gaps that widen every day."
"KERA is thrilled to partner with NPR and our colleagues across TEXAS to create a new model for public radio news reporting," said KERA President/CEO MARY ANNE ALHADEFF. "This collaboration represents a profound extension of our service to millions of listeners throughout our vast and diverse state."
The project is hiring a managing editor and two senior editors and has already hired tow newscasters and an editor, with a team of over two dozen reporters at the partner stations.
