ENTERCOM News-Talk WWL-A-F/NEW ORLEANS' TWITTER account tweeted, then deleted, a homophobic slur directed at one of its own hosts TUESDAY afternoon (9/10), according to a report in THE NEW ORLEANS ADVOCATE's GAMBIT WEEKLY.
Evening "THE LAST LAP" sports host SETH DUNLAP recently disclosed in a FACEBOOK post that he is gay, doing so in reaction to the controversy surrounding SAINTS quarterback DREW BREES' work with FOCUS ON THE FAMILY and that organization's relationship with conversion therapy advocates. YESTERDAY, DUNLAP tweeted a followup to an earlier tweet about the SAINTS reading, "Which of these 5 “overreactions” isn’t actually an overreaction? You tell me..." The station's official account then retweeted DUNLAP's comment with the response "That you're a (homophobic slur redacted)." The tweet was up for long enough to elicit several angry responses and was screen-shotted before being deleted.
About three hours after the slur tweet, WWL's account tweeted, "We are aware of a tweet that went out today from the WWL account. The content of the tweet is categorically offensive and abhorrent to the station. We are actively investigating this incident and will take swift and appropriate action once we determine how this occurred."
While DUNLAP did not respond to GAMBIT's request for comment, he did tweet, "I'm just going to really enjoy knowing somebody is exceptionally upset I get to talk sports every night for a living," illustrated by a GIF of HOMER SIMPSON lounging on a pool float with a soda and phone; on TUESDAY night's show, DUNLAP opened with a comment about how "the power of sport transforms the hate and divisiveness" in the rest of our lives, following that with ELTON JOHN's "Your Song."
