THE 911 MEMORIAL webpage reminds us that, "On SEPTEMBER 11, 2001, 19 terrorists who were members of al-Qaeda, an Islamist extremist network, hijacked four commercial airplanes. In a coordinated attack, the hijackers intentionally flew two of the planes into the Twin Towers of THE WORLD TRADE CENTER, and a third into THE PENTAGON. Learning about the other hijackings, passengers and crew members on the fourth plane launched a counterattack, spurring the hijacker pilot to crash the plane into a field in PENNSYLVANIA. Nearly 3,000 people were killed on that day, the single largest loss of life resulting from a foreign attack on American soil."

ENTERCOM Classic Hits WCBS-F/NEW YORK has posted a number of 9/11-related stories to its website.
EMMIS Top 40/Rhythmic WQHT (HOT 97)/NEW YORK helped memorialize 9/11 by spending time featuring music from 2001, focusing on JAY-Z and his BLUEPRINT album. A BROOKLYN native, JAY-Z's BLUEPRINT album was so much a part of the Hip Hop soundtrack of NEW YORK in 2001.
Another poignant focus from HOT 97's EBRO IN THE MORNING team member ROSENBERG was the way the attacks of the day affected NEW YORK's Muslim citizens and how their lives changed that day. The pain of the attacks on them as NEW YORKERS and then how they would be looked at, and treated, every day afterward.
iHEARTMEDIA WASH/WASHINGTON, DC morning show host TOBY KNAPP of TOBY + CHILLI IN THE MORNING shared, "Clearly, we're mindful of what this day means in DC. Producer KALA does a feature we call MORNING MINDSET and she chose the words SANDY DAHL, wife of FLIGHT 93 pilot JASON DAHL to mark the day. CHILLI included details for the many memorial services that are happening across the DMV today. At 8:46a, we paused to remember and reflect at that moment, when, 18 years ago, that first plane hit the WORLD TRADE CENTER site. Respectful, mindful and eternally optimistic was our tone today, which is what we believe our audience expects from us as we live our lives to honor those who were lost today, and I think that's what TOBY + CHILLI IN THE MORNING delivered this morning."
iHEARTMEDIA syndicated superstar and WHTZ (Z100)/NEW YORK morning show host ELVIS DURAN told ALL ACCESS, "This morning we did as we’ve done every year: we observed a brief moment of silence into a song we feel appropriate for the mood and day. This year we featured ARLISSAA’s 'We Won’t Move.' Also, we had numerous conversations about that morning 18 years ago and how it still affects our listeners today."
TOWNSQUARE Alternative WRRV/POUGHKEEPSIE, NY's Brand Mgr. BILL DUNN said the station is commemorating with a series of blog and social media posts. THE MORNING GRIND's NICK KESSLER, who grew up in MICHIGAN, shared his perspective on the station's blog:
"It's a horrific tragedy. I've always known that but after I moved to NEW YORK it became so much more personal. Depending on how old you were on SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 you probably remember where you were and what you were doing when you first saw or heard about the attack on the Twin Towers. I was in MS. SPIES' 5th grade social studies class when another teacher came in and yelled at us to turn on the television. Shortly after, the towers fell and a plane had crashed into the Pentagon. The rest is history.
"My brother joined the service shortly after that day. I'll never forget about 9/11. There's no way you cannot think about at least once on SEPTEMBER 11th. After the day of the tragedy we mourned for weeks with the rest of the nation but I cannot recall observing the day every year since the attack. The reason for that might be I'm from MICHIGAN and I'm sad to say that it may have been out of sight and out of mind. I had never met a NEW YORKER, I had never been to NEW YORK and quite honestly never planned on going, Fast forward 15 years and here I am. I'm roughly an hour and a half away from where one of the saddest incidents in our nation's short history took place.
"It didn't hit me until about a year ago when I actually met people who were working in MANHATTAN that day and relatives of survivors of 9/11. I'm both sad and embarrassed that it took something like that to realize the importance of observing 9/11. It's important we never forget. Thanks to new legislation, public schools in NEW YORK will now be required to observe SEPTEMBER 11th."
The staff behind ALPHA MEDIA LOUISVILLE Urban WGZB (B96.5) and Urban AC WMJM (MAGIC 101.3) shared there memories on the 18th anniversary of SEPTEMBER 11, 2001, here.
SETON HALL News/Talk WSOU (89.5 FM)/EAST ORANGE, NJ, had two reporters in lower MANHATTAN covering the 9-11 Memorial and Museum’s Sept. 11 commemoration ceremony with live reports twice each hour this morning, in addition to our coverage in our twice hourly newscasts. WSOU also joined with other broadcasters in the NEW YORK market by observing a moment of silence at 8:46A (ET)
Commented station GM MARK MABEN, "This week’s commemorations will also be covered on this weekend’s edition of PIRATE NEWS DESK, a weekly news and public affairs program. SEPTEMBER 11th is a solemn day for the station and our listeners and we observe the day each year with a moment of silence, news of the day’s remembrances, and reflection."
In observance of 9/11 Day, iHEARTRADIO has produced "9/11 Day: Honoring Heroes," a 30-minute long form show that "focuses on the importance of honoring our heroes and serving our communities by doing good deeds." The show was hosted by Rock WAXQ (Q104.3)/NEW YORK's on-air personality SHELLI SONSTEIN and it aired across all iHEARTMEDIAs broadcast stations.
GORDON BROADCAST CONSULTANTS Jewish/Adult Hits WJPR-A/EDISON, NJ, morning show host AL GORDON: "This morning was more a solemn nature. I played a lot of JEWISH songs that made reference to 9-11. A few actually have clips of the events as they unfolded that morning. We also did songs relating to the upcoming High Holidays. During break the format, I played songs like 'Bridge Over Troubled Water.'
"I opened the phones for the entire broadcast and had people calling in, telling their stories and where they were, etc. I must tell you, of course, we lost many from our local community here in central NEW JERSEY who worked in MANHATTAN. We were fortunate in some ways that a lot of religious Jews were still in synagogue that morning and planned on going in later because of extra prayers this time of year."
