PRX has announced that the public radio fixture "STUDIO 360 WITH KURT ANDERSEN" will end production in FEBRUARY 2020, ending a 20 year run. The pop culture and arts show originally launched in 2000 as a co-production with NEW YORK PUBLIC RADIO News-Talk WNYC-A-F/NEW YORK, with WNYC dropping out and SLATE stepping in as co-producer in 2017. ANDERSEN will exit the show early, ending his full-time hosting role at the end of OCTOBER.
“STUDIO 360 has presented a who’s who of diverse cultural leaders, performers, and creators with verve and style,” said PRX Chief Content Officer JOHN BARTH. “Anchored by KURT ANDERSEN’s sharp, inquisitive, free-range mind and personality, a generation of creative producers has explored an impressive scope of arts and culture. We’re proud of all that STUDIO 360 has brought into the lives of listeners over a remarkable 20 years.”
“When we started STUDIO 360 back at the turn of the century, in the pre-podcast era, there really were no national radio shows devoted to art and pop culture,” said ANDERSEN. “I was told that public radio had tried and failed to do that, and this would be one last try. Our idea was to be smart as well as fun, to cover the brand new and the great old, the high and low and in between, with stories and conversations with artists and makers about the ideas behind work and the nuts and bolts of making it. I had zero experience making radio or hosting anything, so it was a huge leap of faith on everyone’s part. It was never easy fitting STUDIO 360 in among all the other stuff I do -- writing books in particular but also TV and theater and digital media projects -- but I’m so glad I did.”
