Bruce Walton, Former KIFM/San Diego Owner/GM, Dies At 68

BRUCE WALTON, a former DALLAS COWBOYS player who became GM/Owner of KIFM/SAN DIEGO in the '80s and '90s, passed away FRIDAY (10/18) at 68, according to the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE.
WALTON, brother of basketball legend BILL WALTON, was a defensive tackle at UCLA and played on special teams for the COWBOYS in 1975-76. He then became an AE and LSM at KCBQ-A/SAN DIEGO in 1976-81 sales manager and then, in 1981 LSM and GM at KIFM, which he flipped to an early version of Smooth Jazz, first with a night show in 1982 and as a full format flip in 1987, and XHITZ; WALTON's KIFM BROADCASTING L.P., a merger of competing applicants for the frequency, won the battle at the FCC for KIFM's dial spot in 1988 after WEST COAST MEDIA lost its license, and subsequently sold the station in 1996.
He later served as VP/Development for a SAN DIEGO developer and as VP/Government Relations at THE COMPETITOR GROUP, parent of the ROCK 'N ROLL MARATHON.
