While G/O MEDIA grapples with the drama of the entire staff of DEADSPIN resigning and the future of the popular sports website in doubt, one of the company's other websites, THE ONION, is partnering with SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT on a satirical daily podcast parodying popular daily news update podcasts like THE NEW YORK TIMES' "THE DAILY." VARIETY reports that THE ONION's "THE TOPICAL" will debut in JANUARY; THE ONION previously produced the true crime podcast parody "A VERY FATAL MURDER," the second season of which was produced for LUMINARY.
G/O MEDIA, a venture backed by private equity firm GREAT HILL PARTNERS, acquired THE ONION and the former GIZMODO MEDIA GROUP and GAWKER MEDIA websites in APRIL from UNIVISION; the company is reportedly in talks to sell THE ONION's "clickbait site" parody CLICKHOLE, while G/O Editorial Director PAUL MAIDMENT, who issued the order for DEADSPIN writers to "stick to sports" that led to interim Editor-in-Chief BARRY PETCHESKY's firing and the subsequent resignation of the site's entire editorial staff, has also resigned, telling G/O staffers in an email that he is "pursu(ing) an entrepreneurial opportunity."
