President DONALD TRUMP told the CORONAVIRUS Task Force in MARCH that he wanted to host a two-hour daily radio talk show about the pandemic but later decided not to do the show in fear of encroaching on RUSH LIMBAUGH's territory, according to a report in THE NEW YORK TIMES.
The TIMES' ELAINA PLOTT reports that TRUMP proposed the radio idea in early MARCH, saying that he would host a two-hour daily show taking calls without screening, but suddenly, later that day, he said that he would not go ahead with the idea, because he did not want to compete with LIMBAUGH, rejecting a suggestion that he could host the show on weekends only. An official involved in the effort told the TIMES that "it wasn’t the first time Mr. TRUMP had discussed hosting a radio show from the WHITE HOUSE" but that some in the room "were unsure whether the president’s proposal was a joke."
LIMBAUGH has been one of TRUMP's most vocal supporters, including downplaying the CORONAVIRUS threat when TRUMP himself did so, and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from TRUMP at the STATE OF THE UNION address this year. He said on his show FRIDAY that TRUMP calls him once a week "just to see how I'm doing," occasionally joined by another former radio talk host, Vice President MIKE PENCE.
The WHITE HOUSE declined comment on the report.
