ALL ACCESS sends condolences to the family of COUNTRY RADIO HALL OF FAME MEMBER BOB MITCHELL (aka WALTER DETWEILER), who died on APRIL 16th. He is best known for his work as Operations, Music and Programming Manager, as well as air personality, at KCKC/SAN BERNARDINO, CA from 1966-1993. In 1993 he joined on KHOZ/HARRISON, AR — which serves the BRANSON, MO market — as Promotions Dir. and midday host.
One of the first board members of COUNTRY RADIO BROADCASTERS, MITCHELL was inducted into that organization’s Hall of Fame in the on-air category in 2005. He also volunteered his time as an Agenda Chair for COUNTRY RADIO SEMINAR in 1976.
According this MITCHELL’s family, “Radio is all he ever wanted to do, and [he] loved it so much that after studying to be a Mennonite preacher, he left to take his first radio job. He wasn’t allowed to listen to music as a child, but he snuck a small radio into his bedroom, put it under his pillow at night and listened to WIBG/PHILADELPHIA and DJ BOBBY MITCHELL, who inspired his radio name.”
He is survived by his four children, including CURB-WORD ENTERTAINMENT VP/National Promotion JERI COOPER, who tells ALL ACCESS, “My father loved everything about Country radio, music and community." Survivors also include eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you please donate to a local musician, an out of work radio personality, or support the RECORDING ACADEMY’s MUSICARES charity here.
