Influential former FCC General Counsel and NATIONAL TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND INFORMATION ADMINISTRATION Administrator HENRY GELLER has passed away, reports THE WASHINGTON POST. He was 96 and died of bladder cancer on APRIL 7th in WASHINGTON.
GELLER, FCC Deputy General Counsel in 1961-64, General Counsel in 1964-70 and Special Assistant to the Chairman in 1970-73, Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Communications and Information in the CARTER administration in 1978-80, and the NTIA's first Administrator, was the driving force behind the Commission's move to ban cigarette advertising on television, convincing the agency to require equal time for anti-smoking counter-advertising that resulted in tobacco companies pulling all of its ads starting on APRIL 1, 1970.
After his service at the NTIA, GELLER worked in public interest law and communications research, heading the WASHINGTON CENTER FOR PUBLIC POLICY RESEARCH and working on the Children's Television Act.
