PODCAST MOVEMENT 2021's final day kicked off with podcast war stories and origin chronicles and included panels and presentations on monetization, marketing, and other standard podcasting topics.
Getting underway about 10 minutes late and without moderator JOHN WORDOCK of CUMULUS PODCAST NETWORK (absent due to a family emergency), CUMULUS' keynote panel of "podcast veterans" launched the day's sessions with a conversation covering things experienced and learned in creating podcasts. "STACKING BENJAMINS" host JOE SAUL-SEHY, doubling as panelist and substitute moderator, took fellow panelists GABY DUNN ("BAD WITH MONEY"), CHRIS COLBERT (DCP ENTERTAINMENT), and PAULA PANT ("AFFORD EVERYTHING") through a talk about the past (mistakes made early on) and future (video, DUNN and COLBERT asserted) of podcasting.
A presentation from LEMONADA MEDIA followed, at its heart a promotional video offering a chronicle of how the podcast producer, founded by JESSICA CORDOVA KRAMER (who hosted the video) and STEPHANIE WITTLES WACHS, went from a single show to a full company with a slate of 17 podcasts and over 30 full-time staffers in about a year and a half.
AD RESULTS MEDIA CEO MARSHALL WILLIAMS brought a surprise and appropriate guest to his presentation on brand safety in podcast advertising, BARSTOOL SPORTS Chief Revenue Officer DEIRDRE LESTER, whose company is known for edgy content. WILLIAMS noted that the increasing success of podcasting in building an audience attracts the kind of major advertiser that would be more inclined to avoid controversial or risque content. "I don't want to police the content," WILLIAMS said, from the agency standpoint. "I just want to alert the advertiser of what they're getting into." He explained the concept of "brand suitability," aligning a client with content based on a willingness to be associated with edgy or political content, and brought LESTER out to discuss selling ads for controversial content, saying that she finds brand suitability more interesting than the safety issue ("with higher risk comes greater reward").
PODCAST MOVEMENT plans to bring back its EVOLUTIONS event in LOS ANGELES MARCH 23-26 at the JW MARRIOTT AT LA LIVE, and the main event in DALLAS at the SHERATON DOWNTOWN DALLAS on AUGUST 23-36.
