WDKX/Rochester, NY Co-Founder Gloria Langston Passes Away

MONROE COUNTY BROADCASTING Urban WDKX/ROCHESTER, NY has announced that station co-founder GLORIA LANGSTON has passed away.
LANGSTON and her husband ANDREW signed on WDKX in APRIL 1974 as the first Black-owned station in ROCHESTER and one of the first Black-owned radio properties in the state of NEW YORK; ANDREW LANGSTON passed away in 2010. The call letters were created as a symbol of their 6-year struggle with the FCC to win an available FM frequency. The "D" stands for FREDERICK DOUGLASS, "K" for MARTIN LUTHER KING JR., and "X" for MALCOLM X. The station remains family owned.
"With heavy hearts we regret to inform you that the co-founder of WDKX, GLORIA LANGSTON, has passed away," the station posted. "We appreciate your patience, love and understanding as we process her transition."
