CES 2023, the CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW, got underway with Media Day on TUESDAY (1/3), featuring a series of vendor press conferences and the annual "Tech Trends to Watch" presentation.
CONSUMER TECHNOLOGY ASSOCIATION VP/Research STEVE KOENIG hosted the "Tech Trends to Watch" session, which included his musing on the possibility that the Features as a Service (FaaS) model of offering automotive features on a paid subscription basis could lead to AM/FM radio being offered only to those who are willing to pay extra for it. FaaS would allow automakers to enable or disable features based on whether the car owner is paying for the services.
Otherwise, KOENIG's talk repeated themes from past CES shows, with 5G a recurring theme and segments on enterprise technology innovation in the face of challenges like supply chain vulnerability, semiconductor demand softening, labor shortage, inflation and rising interest rates, and recession; logistics and warehouse automation; cybersecurity; the Metaverse (virtualization and immersion); and transportation (EVs, autonomous vehicles, in-vehicle "screenification" experience).
CES will be open through FRIDAY, with CTA Pres./CEO GARY SHAPIRO delivering his "State of the Industry" keynote on THURSDAY morning (1/5) along with a keynote from JOHN DEERE CEO JOHN MAY and SXM MEDIA offering a podcasting overview on FRIDAY.
