Four-time GRAMMY AWARD-winning recording engineer MARK CAPPS, 54, was shot and killed by a NASHVILLE SWAT officer who was responding to a domestic violence warrant YESTERDAY (1/5). According to THE TENNESSEAN, CAPPS held his wife and 23-year-old stepdaughter at gunpoint for hours at their home, repeatedly threatening to kill them. When he fell asleep, they escaped with their pets and fled to a nearby police precinct.
"Warrants for two counts of aggravated kidnapping and two counts of aggravated assault were issued," according to the newspaper, while the women worked to file an order of protection against CAPPS. Police went to the home, and while three SWAT officers were setting up outside, CAPPS came to the front door with a pistol raised and was shot after failing to show his hands.
He died at the scene. No police were injured in the shooting.
CAPPS won all four of his GRAMMYs in the Best Polka Album category over four consecutive years (2005-2008). But according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, had also "worked with top artists like ALABAMA, THE CHICKS, NEIL DIAMOND, AMY GRANT, MICHAEL W. SMITH, BROOKS & DUNN and BARRY MANILOW." He was the son of GRAND OLE OPRY and NASHVILLE studio guitarist JIMMY CAPPS, a member of the MUSICIANS HALL OF FAME. The elder CAPPS died in 2020. MARK CAPPS' brother, stagehand JEFF CAPPS, died on TUESDAY (1/3).
Police say MARK CAPPS had no previous arrest history in the county.
