Can ‘The Tonight Show’ Offer Lessons On How To Fix A Struggling Radio Brand?

A longtime viewer of NBC’s “THE TONIGHT SHOW,” COUNTRY’S RADIO COACH owner JOHN SHOMBY has followed the show’s evolution through several different hosts, noting how producers were able to tailor the show over time to match each one. Most notably, he observed how current host JIMMY FALLON and his team changed their approach to entertaining post-pandemic.
In his latest column for ALL ACCESS, SHOMBY dissects a VARIETY article about those changes, and relates them to a struggling radio personality or brand, calling the piece “a literal clinic on how to reimagine a once very successful franchise.” He details four “definite parallels for any radio station experiencing the same issues affecting a ratings decline.” Those tips include identifying your most critical issues, and involving the entire staff in the creative process.
