Decades ago, the job description for an on-air personality was pretty straightforward: have a good voice, run a tight board, make appearances, and show up for your shift on time. But as the radio business has changed, and video and social media have become compelling tools, that job description is much more nuanced and complicated these days.
In his latest column for ALL ACCESS, COUNTRY’S RADIO COACH owner JOHN SHOMBY pulls language from real, current-day want ads to paint a picture of all that the job currently entails. “The responsibilities have grown, as has the amount of work,” he writes. “One thing hasn’t changed: there are still 24 hours in a day. No one has added any hours, or any days, for that matter. The talent who can do [it all] day in and day out with reasonable success is a sought-after individual these days.”
