It was AUGUST 16, 1986 at 6p when NEW YORK CITY first heard: "From the top...top...top of the WORLD TRADE CENTER... 103.5 WQHT NEW YORK ... HOT 103.5." And the rest is history as EMMIS and then-PD JOEL SALKOWITZ launched what became market leading Top 40/Rhythmic WQHT (HOT 103.5), which later morphed into HOT 97 with a better signal to host the dance format before an eventual shift in emphasis to Hip-Hop at the end of 1993.
Your journey back in time to when it all began -- with original sweepers by CHUCK RILEY on voice and RICK ALLEN in the studio, and original HOT 97 music -- begins when you click on www.originalhot97.com. Reach SALKOWITZ at NYFlyboy@aol.com.
