Last week two CHARLOTTE policemen, officers CLARK and SHELTON, were downed in the line of duty. They are the first officers to die in the line of duty in more than a decade. And this morning at 6:30a CBS Top 40 WNKS (KISS 95.1)/CHARLOTTE syndicated morning duo ACE & TJ announced the formation of a fund to build not one but two memorial parks honoring each officer in their respective home towns of LOCUST, NC and LINCOLNTON, NC.
Within minutes of this announcement, US Representative SUE MYRICK called and praised ACE & TJ for their idea. The respective city managers called in to announce the land would be donated for the parks. Two major homebuilders have offered to build the parks, as well as local concrete companies, and other local companies have offered to donate supplies and equipment such as benches, swing sets, and more.
NASCAR driver ROBERT YATES' team have offered to donate 100% of the team's winnings from the COCA COLA 600 which runs MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND at LOWES MOTOR SPEEDWAY (5/27) in CHARLOTTE, toward the building of parks.
DEL FRISCO's called and is donating $10,000 to the fund in celebration of their new restaurant in CHARLOTTE.
WNKS OM/PD JOHN REYNOLDS reports that in addition to all of the above, over $27,000 in additional cash has been pledged. "The outpouring of manpower and supplies to build these parks has been incredible. They will honor the memory of these two officers forever. This is a great demonstration of the amazing power of radio over any other medium. This is another reason why we need to make sure that this great medium, radio, thrives as it is the best resource we have for moving people to action in a local community."
