Spitzer Aides Snared In Dirty Tricks Scandal

The NEW YORK TIMES reported YESTERDAY (7/24) that aides to NEW YORK Gov. ELIOT SPITZER improperly used the State Police to gather information about the governor’s chief rival, JOSEPH L. BRUNO, the State Senate majority leader.
A report coming from the state's Attorney General office accused DARREN DOPP, the Governor’s Communications Director, of concocting a false story about BRUNO to damage him politically. DOPP further made misleading statements about the Governor's office involvement in the dissemination of the story.
Soon after the report was made public, SPITZER suspended DOPP indefinitely without pay, and dismissed his liaison to the State Police, Assistant Secretary for Public Safety WILLIAM HOWARD.
SPITZER promised to bring integrity back to the state capitol after years as an aggressive State Attorney General. However many in the radio and record industry remember SPITZER publicly unloading reams of label and radio e-mails and correspondence to prove instances of payola -- even though the great majority of that paperwork consisted of legal and above-board promotional discussion.
