The AP reports that former LOUISVILLE radio personality TODD KELLY (real name: TODD SMITH), pleaded guilty TUESDAY to charges that he bilked listeners out of donations by falsely claiming he had terminal illnesses on his radio show. The official counts are mail fraud, wire fraud and money laundering.
SMITH, 37, went on-air to solicit donations because he claimed to be suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or LOU GEHRIG's disease, and cancer. He claimed the money would be used to find a cure for his illnesses. However, he used the thousands of dollars he collected for personal expenses such as car payments, restaurant meals, limousines, vacations and alcohol.
The plea agreement will have SMITH serving a minimum sentence of seven years in prison and paying restitution of $74,270. The official sentencing is on DECEMBER 10.
