The $5 million sale of noncommercial PBS affiliate WXEL-TV and NPR affiliate WXEL-F/WEST PALM BEACH by BARRY UNIVERSITY to the owners of WNET (TV)/NEWARK-NEW YORK and WLIW-TV/GARDEN CITY-NEW YORK has been pending for about two years now and on file with the FCC since the spring of 2006, but has yet to receive regulatory approval, and the PALM BEACH POST reports that the parties met with the FCC WEDNESDAY in an attempt to ease FCC concerns over the deal.
The deal between BARRY and EDUCATIONAL BROADCASTING CORP. (partnered with a local group) was objected to by one local viewer, but the FCC voiced similar concerns that approving the deal may set a precedent for similar deals.
