Just as ALL ACCESS broke earlier in the day, CBS Talker WTZN (93.7)/PITTSBURGH, which had been stunting Christmas music all week, flipped back to Top 40 as "B94 PITTSBURGH's HIT MUSIC."
Interrupting WHAM's "Last Christmas," the station ran a promo recalling 1981, when "a new station influenced a generation." on APRIL 1st, flipping WJOI to WBZZ (B94), with the first song being BILLY JOEL's "You May Be Right." After airing a few old liners and sweepers with more historical references, they declared "The B is back" and launched with JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE'S "Sexyback."
"Bringing this great radio station back to PITTSBURGH is one of the most thrilling events of my career," said CBS RADIO/PITTSBURGH VP/Programming KEITH CLARK,. "There’s rarely been a day that has gone by when someone hasn't said they missed B94 -- well, the B is back it and will play an even bigger role in the daily lives of the local PITTSBURGH listener.
"B94 was an incredibly fun station. You never knew what crazy thing would happen next. The B gave away a million dollars, buried 10 Grand in the Sand, launched an air personality off of MOUNT WASHINGTON with helium balloons, and had listeners live in a car with Live in It to Win It. B94 was reality radio way before "Survivor" hit your television. We will bring that excitement back to PITTSBURGH ," stated CLARK.
The station is going commercial-free all weekend, with 94-minute music sweeps immediately thereafter. You can listen here.
The launch was supervised by KEITH CLARK, SVP/Programming GREG STRASSELL, WBBM-F (B96)/CHICAGO and CBS VP/Top 40 TODD CAVANAH, WNKS/CHARLOTTE OM/PD JOHN REYNOLDS, and CBS/PITTSBURGH's RYAN MILL.
Meanwhile, B94 will look for a PD to man the ship. Audio and resumes to KEITH CLARK (keith.clark@cbsradio.com).
As hinted earlier today, sister Hot AC WZPT (STAR 100.7) is now all '80s and '90s and is shifting into a more Mainstream AC position.
