The two minor league hockey teams in DES MOINES will not be heard on terrestrial broadcast radio this year, with both opting for streaming online coverage, reports the DES MOINES REGISTER. The AMERICAN HOCKEY LEAGUE's IOWA STARS and the USHL's DES MOINES BUCCANEERS were heard on SAGA Contemporary Christian KPSZ-A/DES MOINES and CLEAR CHANNEL Regional Mexican KBGG-A (LA INDOMABLE)/DES MOINES, respectively, last season and will be heard through B2 NETWORKS' streaming service this season.
"It’s the way of the times," BUCCANEERS VP of Sales and Marketing BRAD CHIAFOS told the REGISTER. "We’re one of the few teams in the USHL that still had radio broadcasts." Saying that the team's discussions with fans disclosed that the demand for radio coverage was "not significant," STARS Pres. JOHN OLVER added, "The large majority listen or watch via the Internet. We only found the need for radio actually at the game. So we’ll have our own in-arena broadcast on an AM signal for people who like to listen there."
