A WAY-FM translator in FT. MYERS, FL, was hit by vandals sometime in the early morning last FRIDAY (10/12), reported CBS affiliate WINK-TV's website. The signal which normally broadcasts at 75,000 watts is currently only broadcasting at 50 watts.
It is believed that the vandals climbed a fence and got into the shed that houses the station's transmitter. Once inside, they took something like a bat or sledgehammer to the transmitter. The vandals also wrecked the back-up transmitting equipment.
Radio engineer RICH GALLO says the transmitter costs at least $60,000, which is covered by insurance.
