FCC Rejects Challenge To WEAC-WNOW-F Deal

The FCC has rejected a challenge to the sale of Southern Gospel/Country WEAC-A and Regional Mexican WNOW-F (RADIO LIDER)/GAFFNEY, SC by GAFFNEY BROADCASTING, INC. to DAVIDSON MEDIA GROUP. JOHN FLYNN filed an informal objection complaining about losing the local programming previously offered on the formerly Country WAGI (now WNOW-F). The Commission noted that format changes are not part of the FCC's oversight of broadcasters. WNOW-F is moving into the CHARLOTTE market.

In other actions, the FCC denied JAMIE PATRICK BROADCASTING, LTD.'s application for renewal of KTRY/BASTROP, LA and ordered the station to cease operation; the license for the station had expired in 2004 and the renewal application was not filed until over 30 days after the station was initially notified that it could no longer operate in 2006. A request for Special Temporary Authority to operate pending license renewal was granted on MAY 17th, 2006 but expired on NOVEMBER 11th, and the licensee did not apply for the STA to be renewed.

The Commission also denied the Petition for Reconsideration by GARY ROBINSON of the denial of license renewal for FM translator K272BO/BISHOP, CA, which filed a license renewal application six months after its license had expired and two months after it was notified to cease broadcasting.

COOSA VALLEY NEWS' petition to deny the construction permit for a new FM in PLAINVILLE, GA to HOWARD C. TOOLE was also rejected by the FCC, which said that CVN's allegation that sole proprietor TOOLE was in fact standing in for another party (the owner of the stations for which TOOLE works) was supported by only hearsay.

And the renewals of BROADCO's KMGZ/LAWTON, TX and K95.5, INC.'s LITX/HUGO, OK were approved by the FCC but a 25% penalty was tacked on to each for failure to submit the requisite fee with the renewal application.
