The reconstruction of the transmission tower of CLEAR CHANNEL Talk KFI-A/LOS ANGELES hits another road block with the FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION's agreement to further study the tower's effect on air traffic.
The tower in LA MIRADA stood 760 feet when a small plane crashed into and toppled the structure in 2004, and CLEAR CHANNEL had received FAA approval for a new 684-foot tower, but the managers of nearby FULLERTON AIRPORT and other officials pushed for the FAA to reconsider its approval and the city of FULLERTON and the CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION petitioned the FAA to rescind the approval.
The FAA is aiming to finish its review by the end of NOVEMBER. KFI has been operating from the LA MIRADA site at reduced power and plans to use the former KRKD-KXTA (1150 AM) site in MONTECITO HEIGHTS as a temporary antenna site while rebuilding the LA MIRADA tower.
