The AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS were held last night (11/22) at THE SHRINE AUDITORIUM in LOS ANGELES, and this year's festivities were a democratic affair spared any dominating performances by a single artist or group. Comedian CEDRIC THE ENTERTAINER hosted the event, which featured live performances by CYNDI LAUPER and SARAH McLACHLAN, GWEN STEFANI, THE EURYTHMICS, PHARRELL, and THE ROLLING STONES (who closed ther show with two live songs from SALT LAKE CITY
MARIAH CAREY, who entered the evening with the most nominations at four, took home just one award (favorite female artist in the soul-R&B category). Other winners included GWEN STEFANI (favorite female pop artist ), THE BLACK EYED PEAS (favorite rap/hip-hop group and favorite pop/rock group), EMINEM (favorite rap/hip-hop male), 50 CENT (favorite rap/hip-hop album), MISSY ELLIOTT (favorite rap/hip-hop female), TIM McGRAW (favorite country male and favrotie country album), GRETCHEN WILSON (favorite country female), GREEN DAY (favorite alternative act and favorite alternative album), and DESTINY'S CHILD (favorite soul and R&B band), WILL SMITH (favorite pop/rock male artist), and SUGARLAND (breakthrough new artist).
