A former LOUISVILLE radio personality has been sentenced to seven years in prison for bilking listeners out of donations. TODD SMITH, who went by TODD KELLY on the air, pleaded guilty in AUGUST (NET NEWS 8/22) to mail fraud, wire fraud and money laundering.
The 37-year-old fraudulently claimed to have amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or LOU GEHRIG's disease, and cancer. He claimed to be raising money for a cure, but instead used thousands of dollars in donations for personal expenses, including car payments, restaurant meals, limousines, vacations and alcohol.
U.S. Attorney DAVID L. HUBER said MONDAY that the sentencing "closes a tragic story in the history of charitable giving in our very giving community."
SMITH also will have to pay restitution, with the amount determined later.
