MILLENIUM Talk WKXW (NEW JERSEY 101.5)/TRENTON is at it again, drawing what the station estimated at over 2,000 protestors to the STATE HOUSE in TRENTON for the "Flying Pigs Rally" FRIDAY morning to battle against a proposed highway toll increase.
Gov. JON CORZINE's proposal for sharp hikes in tolls on the GARDEN STATE PARKWAY, NEW JERSEY TURNPIKE and ATLANTIC CITY EXPRESSWAY included his assertion that "pigs will fly over the Statehouse before there's a realistic level of new taxes or spending cuts that can fix this mess." The station picked up on CORZINE's comment and promoted the rally on the JERSEY GUYS afternoon show and JIM GEARHART's morning show.
Pink pig balloons were released over the capitol to symbolize the crowd's opposition to CORZINE's plan, which would borrow against the projected revenues from the toll hike to pay down the current state debt, a move critics liken to paying off one high-rate credit card with another high-rate credit card. JERSEY GUYS CASEY BARTHOLOMEW and RAY ROSSI led the rally, which received extensive coverage on NEW YORK and PHILADELPHIA television and in newspapers statewide.
