Condolences to PAUL HARVEY, PAUL HARVEY JR., and their family on the passing of PAUL SR.'s wife LYNNE "ANGEL" HARVEY SATURDAY morning (5/3) at their RIVER FOREST, IL home after a year-long battle with leukemia.
A ST. LOUIS native, ANGEL HARVEY (born LYNNE COOPER) graduated from WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY in ST. LOUIS and started her radio career in 1939 at KXOK-A/ST. LOUIS, where she met PAUL HARVEY. They married in 1940 and moved to WKZO-A/KALAMAZOO in 1941 and WENR-A/CHICAGO in 1944, where she became PAUL's producer, director, editor, and writer. They joined the ABC RADIO NETWORK in 1951. She also created the TV version of PAUL's commentaries which ran in syndication between 1968 and 1988 as well as the early talk TV program "DILEMMA." ANGEL was inducted into the RADIO HALL OF FAME in 1997.
ANGEL was also active with charities, serving on the boards of the INFANT WELFARE SOCIETY, PREVENT CHILD ABUSE AMERICA, the USO, the ILLINOIS MENTAL HEALTH ASSOCIATION, the ILLINOIS CHARITABLE TRUSTS and Advisory Committee, the JOFFREY BALLET, and the CHILDREN'S HOME AND AID SOCIETY, among others, and was active with animal welfare groups..
A statement from ABC RADIO NETWORKS President JIM ROBINSON read, "ANGEL HARVEY's passing is a loss for all of us in radio. For decades she served as a producer, writer and the inspiring force behind PAUL HARVEY News and Comment. ANGEL was frequently referred to as 'The First Lady of Radio,' and countless charities benefited from her devotion to philanthropic efforts. She was a friend to all who knew her and will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with PAUL, PAUL JR. and the entire HARVEY family."
